Highland Golf Course

Named for its hillside location on Pocatello's east bench, Highland Golf Course is one of two municipal golf courses in Pocatello. Built in 1962, one year before adjacent Highland High School opened, the course sits on real estate donated to the city by the Satterfields, which features the designs of famed Idaho golfer George Von Elm. With its uneven lies, 40-year-old trees lining the fairways, and arguably the most severe breaking greens in the state, Highland may challenge you. (Local hint: The greens break twice as much as they appear and break downhill toward town.)

Like most courses in eastern Idaho, Highland isn't overly long from the tips (approximately 6,500 yards) but manages to test all aspects of your game. For example, the 5th and 8th holes, a pair of par 3s that stretch 200+ yards with very difficult greens, really put your long-iron skills to the test. But if the front nine roughs you up, you can regain your morale on the back nine, which includes three par 5s, two of which are back to back (11 and 12) and just under 500 yards. The signature hole is the newly remodeled par-3 16th hole, which features a fountain-spraying pond waiting to drown any shot chunked off the tee box.
