Opened in the fall of 1963, Highland High School sits on Pocatello's east bench. The original multi-building design, which had been implemented successfully in California, proved a problem for Idaho's winters. Over the years, additions and renovations have enclosed the building.

The name originally chosen for the school was Gate City High School—a tribute to Pocatello's identity as the Gate City to the West. The entering students voiced dislike for the name, however, so nominations were accepted including Harriman High School (in honor of the Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Union Pacific Railroad), Alameda High School (in honor of the city of Alameda absorbed by Pocatello the year before), and Highland High School (in honor of its location high on the east bench). The students cast their votes, and Highland High School it became.
