Gate City Elementary is recognized as an Idaho Merit School—a classification earned when a school significantly exceeds all accreditation standards and meets the requirements outlined in the merit recognition process. Opened in 1982, Gate City features classrooms surrounding a central media center, minimizing corridor area and architectural barriers. Floors and walls are carpeted, and exterior walls are bermed with earth to a height of five feet for energy efficiency.

Gate City and Jefferson Elementary School are sister buildings, sharing the same design and being built at the same time. Jefferson sits on the west bench while Gate City was built on the east bench. Satterfield Realty owned the real estate where Gate City sits, selling the 12-acre site to the school district in the 1970s for $3,000/acre. The name Gate City was chosen as a tribute to Pocatello, known as the "Gate City to the West."

Parents are very welcome at Gate City Elementary. Gate City has many volunteers working at its school. It has a very active PTA and parents are invited to get involved.

2006–2007 Highlights

• Gate City celebrates its students' high achievements and efforts. Teachers work at an accelerated pace in the classroom and promote academic values as well as personal values. Gate City is affiliated with the Gate Way School for the Gifted and Talented Education. It also has a classroom unit of Adjustive Education for students with severe disabilities. It also has a class of district students who are highly gifted in the 5/6 grades.
• Gate City's teachers are all highly qualified and are 100% certified in technology. Nearly all the faculty has earned the Reading Renaissance Master teachers designation.
