Opened in 1982, Gate City features classrooms surrounding a central media center, minimizing corridor area and architectural barriers. Floors and walls are carpeted, and exterior walls are bermed with earth to a height of five feet for energy efficiency. Gate City and Jefferson Elementary School are sister buildings, sharing the same design and being built at the same time. Jefferson sits on the west bench while Gate City was built on the east bench. Satterfield Realty owned the real estate where Gate City sits, selling the 12-acre site to the school district in the 1970s for $3,000/acre.
